CH. 84 - Choose to Change
In class, a different day… Samuel walks down the aisles of students while handing out graded tests, giving them a proud smile as she goes.
“I’m very proud of you all. Test scores are consistently up from last time. Looks like the extra lectures have been doing you some good.” She says with a smug smile as the class sweats a bit.
“I doubt that…” Kitaro mumbles.
“Alright, you got me! It’s probably the interactive booklets.” Samuel says with a defeated look, putting her hands up. Some of the students smile and giggle.
“It’s way more entertaining that way.” Airi says.
“I like the pictures!” Hisana says with a big smile. Samuel sighs and puts a hand on her hip.
“I guess making family life studying more fun really works.” Samuel says with a smile. She then turns around and looks at Sugawara, who is staring out the window, not paying full attention. “Mr. Ito.” she calls out. Sugawara looks at her, snapping to attention.
“Yes?” Sugawara says. Samuel gives him a look.
“Stay after class. We need to talk about your test.” Samuel says firmly. Sugawara sweats as Samuel raises an eyebrow before walking back to the front of the class. Soon, class ends, and the students begin leaving one by one.
“We’ll wait for you, kay?” Haru says with a smile as Sugawara nods nervously. The group makes their way out of the class as Sugawara stands before Samuel’s desk with a nervous look. Samuel looks at him for a moment before speaking.
“What score do you think you got on your test?” she asks him.
“Uhhhh, oh, I don’t know, like a 90%?” Sugawara says awkwardly. Samuel stares at him for a moment.
“Try more like 81%.” she says. Sugawara snaps his fingers as he tries to look upset.
“Aw, bummer. Guess I’ll have to try harder next time.” He says nervously and awkwardly.
“Mhm. Do you tell yourself that every time you get an 81%?” Samuel asks.
“Yeahhh, that’s only a B grade, right? I should be striving for an A+!” Sugawara says as Samuel looks back down at some papers in front of her.
“Well then, you must tell yourself that a lot because every single test you’ve turned in this year has scored an 81%, no matter the topic or difficulty.” Samuel says. Sugawara stares for a moment with a surprised look before smiling shyly.
“What a coincidence?..” Sugawara says softly. Samuel smiles a bit.
“In order to consistently get a specific score on a test, you must get a certain number of answers correct proportionate to the total number of questions. To do that implies you know every answer to every question as well as exactly how many to mark right.” Samuel explains, looking at him. Sugawara looks down a bit. “Sugawara, I know you are an incredibly smart boy. Maybe everything we do in class is too boring for you?” she asks. Sugawara suddenly gets a worried look.
“No!” he almost shouts. Samuel is surprised at his sudden burst of emotion. Sugawara composes himself a bit. “No, please. I like it in this class. I don’t need to be sent to any advanced program or anything like that.” Sugawara says with almost a begging look. Samuel looks a little concerned before sighing.
“Okay, I understand. Forcing kids out of their comfort zones isn’t always the best thing. But I can’t have you not trying your best. I know you come from a family of extremely smart and successful people, but now it’s your turn to make your own success.” Samuel says. Sugawara sweats a bit and looks down again. “Don’t worry about the shadow your name carries.” Samuel says. Sugawara looks up with a surprised look. “Find what pushes you and go with that. Forge your own path, okay?” Samuel encourages him with a smile. Sugawara’s eyes light up a bit as he nods.
After that, he leaves the classroom and meets with the rest of the group just a bit down the hall. Haru smiles widely when he sees him and rushes to give him a soft kiss.
“What did she want to talk to you about?” Lucy asks.
“Oh, just about my test scores.” Sugawara says with a soft smile.
“You better not be failing!” Chizuru says with a motherly tone and a finger point as he giggles a little and shakes his head. They begin to walk down the hall and on their way out of school as they chat. Haru laughs as he speaks.
“Haha, no way! If Sugawara was failing, I think we all would-”
Suddenly, one of the metal food trays from the cafeteria is swung from around the corner and slammed right into Haru’s face. In an instant, he hits the ground holding his face, as everyone is stunned. Drake smirks while holding the tray in his hands before looking in a different direction. He sweats, and his eyes are intense, but his smirk persists.
“Jeez man, I figured you’d like the joke..” He says with a slightly strained tone as Hikigaya holds his neck tightly in his hand. His eyes are intense, filled with rage and impulsive anger.
“The only thing I’d like right now is for you to drop dead.” He says intensely as he lifts Drake off the ground by the neck, his smirk disappearing. The others are shocked by his intense reaction as Haru holds his nose on the ground, blood streaming down his face. Sugawara is next to him, trying to comfort him.
“Hikigaya-” Chizuru says before Haru speaks up.
“Don’t sweat it, Hikigaya.” He says with a bit of pain in his voice as he sits up, still holding his nose. “This guy isn’t worth getting expelled over.” Haru sweats in pain, but his eyes are serious. Hikigaya looks at Haru for a moment before taking a breath. He looks back at Drake with a more relaxed but still quite angry expression before throwing him against the wall. Drake gasps from the impact and coughs a bit, barely holding himself up.
“You better watch yourself. Try another ‘joke’ like that and I’ll put you in the hospital for life.” Hikigaya threatens before turning away with the others, taking Haru away. Drake glares at him as they leave.
The group helps Haru to his feet and walks away as Shiori stares at Drake from the corner of her eye. They make eye contact as Drake smirks once again at her, despite the sweat on his face from Hikigaya’s action. She gets a serious look as they all leave. Hashigara and another student then step next to Drake from down the hall.
“That guy she’s stuck with seems to be more trouble than we thought. Figured he was just as messed up as her, but he’s way more protective of the others.” Drake says.
“What should we do?” Hashigara asks. Drake thinks for a moment before smiling evilly.
“I have a thought.” He says with a confident tone. The group takes Haru to the nurse’s office to check on his nose.
“Mhm. Feels good, doesn’t seem to be broken, but it’s definitely going to be tender.” She says to Haru, Sugawara, Hikigaya and Chizuru, who joined him in the small office. Haru’s nose is now cleaned up a bit. “I’m gonna bandage you up, but the rest will be up to you being careful. I could also give you some pain meds if it hurts too much.” She offers softly as Haru shakes his head a bit.
“No thanks, I should be okay.” He says softly. She smiles at him before turning around and grabbing a clipboard.
“Okay, now what did you say happened?” she asks.
“Some jerk came out from around the corner and just hit him for no reason!” Sugawara says, frustrated his boyfriend was hurt. The nurse looks shocked at his words.
“That’s not acceptable at all! Do any of you know his name by chance? Anything we could use to locate this student?” she asks. They all have frustrated and conflicted looks on their faces, knowing that none of them caught his name or anything. The nurse sighs softly. “I see. Unfortunately, without a name or any information, we won’t be able to find the student and reprimand them appropriately. If anything comes up though, please come tell the front office. I have made a report on the matter, they’ll take it from there.” The nurse says softly.
They nod before heading out, the rest of the group waiting outside the office. Haru has a bandage over his nose cut and a tissue in one of his nostrils to prevent further bleeding.
“Are you okay? Is your nose gonna fall off?” Hisana asks, genuinely concerned.
“It’s not broken, is it?” Alice asks.
“No way! You really think a food tray could break my nose?! Don’t be silly!” Haru says with a laugh as everyone calms down a bit, seeing his high spirits despite the attack. They begin walking together to head home as Shiori lags behind. Her face looks conflicted and frustrated. Lucy notices her look and approaches her.
“Hey, you okay?” Lucy asks.
“Huh? Oh, yeah, yeah, I’m fine. You should be asking Haru if he’s okay, not me.” Shiori says with a smile, but Lucy doesn’t budge.
“What’s going on? You’re obviously thinking about something.” Lucy says firmly. Shiori sweats and looks down.
“I… I can’t help but feel this is my fault…” Shiori says softly. Lucy looks at her confused.
“Your fault? What makes you think that?” she asks.
“The guy who attacked Haru. I think he’s trying to get at me by hurting my friends…” Shiori admits. Lucy is surprised by this.
“Wait, you know the guy? We gotta go tell someone!” Lucy says while looking around before Shiori stops her with a worried and conflicted look.
“Wait! No, we shouldn’t! Or, we should? I don’t know…” She stops and crouches down, holding her head. Her face is concerned and confused. Lucy stops and crouches next to her. “I’ve never had to deal with something like this before… I’ve never had friends to worry about all because of me… I could handle it if he just attacked me but now he’s hurting you guys… And now I don’t know if beating him up will solve it or if we should just tell someone and hope for the best…” Shiori admits out loud as she struggles with the thoughts running through her head. Lucy stares at her for a moment, unsure of what to say in response before looking down.
“Worst of all… I’m afraid you guys won’t want me anymore if it means getting hurt… because of me…” Shiori says in almost a whisper. Lucy looks at her with a surprised expression, now knowing what to say.
“No way!” Lucy says openly. Shiori lifts her head a bit and looks at Lucy. “We’re not gonna abandon you just because some jerk doesn’t know how to handle his emotions.” Lucy says.
“She’s right!” They look up to see Haru and the others looking at her with smiles. “So what if this guy wants to hurt you? Or us? It doesn’t matter because we’re your friends! We’ll take it with a smile if it means defending you! We’ve got your back!” Haru says proudly with a big smile. Hikigaya shakes his head a bit.
“You big dummy. I can’t believe you still haven’t learned that yet.” Hikigaya says with a smile.
“If this guy wants a fight, then we’ll give him one!” Alice says.
“Yeah!” Hisana cheers. Kitaro has his arms crossed with a neutral look on his face.
“I don’t know. This might be more effort than she’s worth.” He says before Suiyoubi punches him in the arm. He rubs it in pain with a chuckle. “Kidding! I’m just kidding.” He says as Suiyoubi gives him a look. Shiori stares at the group as they smile at her before she softly smiles back.
“Guys…” Shiori says softly. Lucy stands and offers her hand to Shiori.
“Friends stick around, even through the tough stuff. We might not know what happened, but hurting someone else to get revenge just isn’t right.” Lucy says. Shiori nods and takes her hand, getting back to her feet.
The next day at school, the group is walking down some stairs, talking and laughing, with Shiori towards the bottom and Hikigaya some steps above her when suddenly the male student from the cafeteria incident comes rushing by.
“Outta the way! I got somewhere to be!” he shouts with a smirk on his face before shoving Hikigaya down when running by. It slows down for a moment as he snickers and as Hikigaya begins to fall forward. He yells as Shiori turns around, her eyes growing wide as she watches him come falling right for her. There is a loud thump as they both hit the ground. The others rush down the stairs with concern before stopping.
“Hikigaya! Shiori!- Oh.” Chizuru says worried before her tone quickly shifts and they all stare. Shiori rubs her head as she props herself up.
“Dang, you’re heavy… You okay?” Shiori asks. Hikigaya props himself up on his elbows.
“Yep. I’ve taken worse falls than that before. You?”
They both have their eyes closed for a moment before their eyes shoot open and a blush runs across their faces. They quickly realize that Shiori had landed on Hikigaya’s lap on top of him. They pause for a moment, in shock of the position, as others around watch and the group giggles. Shiori quickly jumps off of him, her face red as a beet, before closing her eyes and tightening her face.
“You clumsy dumbass!” She shouts before kicking him hard. He flips through the air and slams onto the ground a bit away, his eyes swirling. Drake and Hashigara watch from around a corner with their mouths open wide, upset that nothing bad came from their actions.
“What was that?..” Hashigara whispers as Drake sweats.
“Don’t worry, I have more ideas..”
Another day, Drake and the guy from before load a bag full of heavy weights that requires both of them to carry. They chuckle to themselves before picking up the bag and approaching a window on the third floor. They open it up and look down to see Touma walking by himself in the courtyard.
“Hey big guy!” Drake shouts as Touma looks up to see them tossing the heavy bag out the window. “Catch!”
Drake shouts before laughing with the other guy. The bag falls through the air for a moment before Touma catches it above his head with one arm. The guys are shocked as Touma lowers the bag and looks up at them before giving them a thumbs up and walking away.
A different day, Hashigara and the female from the cafeteria are scribbling on a photo they pinned up to a poster board before spotting someone and dashing away, giggling to themselves. They hide around a corner not too far away as Suiyoubi walks down the hall.
She stops by the poster board and stares at the photo they tacked to the board. It is a picture of her with different scribbles on it, mocking her with the words ‘Goth Freak’ on the bottom of the photo. Suiyoubi stares at it before smiling widely and grabbing the photo then rushing off to the clubroom. Hashigara and the other girl look confused before following her. They listen in for their muffled voices through the door.
“Guys, guys! Look! Someone made fanart of me! How cool!” she says excitedly.
“I’m pretty sure they’re mocking you...” Kitaro says.
“Well duh! But they must think about me a lot if they’re willing to do this. I guess I’m more popular than I realized.” Suiyoubi says happily. The girls facepalm together in frustration at the other failed attempt.
A few days later, Drake sits with his head in his hands and his leg bouncing as a distraught and frustrated look spreads across his face.
“What are we gonna do? The end of the year is coming up, and we haven’t been able to do a single thing!” Hashigara says.
“Shiori hasn’t shown her true colors at all despite her friends being attacked.” Another student says.
“It’s not much attacking since none of it is even affecting them. We need a new plan.” Another says too.
“Why don’t we ask Amy? She was way closer than we were to getting Shiori to snap.” Hashigara says.
“Where is she anyway? I haven’t seen her at all-” As they speak, Drake gets increasingly more irritable.
“Just shut up! All of you! I need to think!” He shouts frustrated in a burst before getting an idea. He grabs his phone and starts texting. Shiori’s phone rings as she checks her messages to see Drake’s number and message.
‘I think its time we handle this don’t you? Meet me after dark at school’
She reads as her eyes squint a bit but don’t show any sign of hesitation. Drake gets up and begins walking away before texting someone else.
‘I think it’s time you do your part’ Drake sends to Amy as he stops and stares at his phone for a moment.
‘Right.’ She responds. He smirks before closing his phone.
Eventually, the night comes as Shiori approaches the school in the dark, dimly lit area, having only the minor lights on. Shiori’s face is serious as she looks around, the collar on her overshirt popped up covering a bit of the lower part of her face. Her eyes are sharp as someone calls to her.
“Hey! Shiori!” Amy calls out in a soft tone before quickly rushing to her. Shiori is surprised to see her again.
“Amy? What are you doing here?” Shiori asks.
“They have a plan for you. You gotta get outta here.!” Amy says in a hurried whisper. Shiori takes a step back from Amy as she approaches her. This surprises Amy and causes her to pull back a bit.
“How do you know that?” Shiori asks with a curious and cautious look. Amy sweats and stumbles for an answer.
“Well- I- I told you, I knew he was planning something, so I-”
“Amy?” Before she can finish her sentence, Drake speaks up. They turn to see Drake and his gang step from the shadows towards them. “Why are you with her? You’re supposed to be waiting inside, isn’t that what you said?” He asks with a confused look as Amy begins to panic.
“No, I didn’t-” She turns towards Shiori, who gives her a slightly betrayed look as Amy's eyes fill with regret and conflictions. Drake rolls his eyes and grunts.
“Whatever. Just get her.” He says as the big guy from before pulls out some rope. The gang starts stepping towards her as Amy stutters over an explanation.
“Shiori, please. I didn’t mean to-”
“Just move.” Shiori says, cutting her off. Shiori stares intently at the gang as Amy steps back with a regretful look on her face. The gang rushes her as Drake watches, noticing Shiori not moving a bit. The guy quickly wraps the rope around her and ties her up. He steps back with a smirk.
“That wasn’t so tough. How is she all that threatening?” He asks while looking back at Drake. Shiori looks down at the ropes tied around her for a moment before lifting her arms and tearing the rope with little to no resistance. The others are all stunned as she casually looks at them.
“What else do you have planned?” She asks calmly as Drake growls in frustration.
“Come on, guys! Get her! We have to restrain her for this to work!” he shouts as they all turn towards her, ready to grab her.
“Asking nicely will probably show better results.” Shiori says as the bigger guy wraps his arms around her and tries to pick her up but, to his shock, he is unable to lift her. He struggles and strains as Shiori stares at him with a plain look.
“Why is she so heavy?.!” he grunts. After a moment, he stops and stumbles back a bit, sweating and panting. “This girl ain’t normal, man…” He says before falling on his back from overstressing himself. Shiori looks at the others.
“Who’s next?” She says with calm eyes as the others grit their teeth with angry looks. They sweat and hesitate, afraid of what she can really do. Drake clenches his fists and shakes angrily with his head lowered.
“I can’t believe it… Even after all this time… you’re still just trampling all over my dreams!” He shouts while looking up at her with an intensely angry look. It fades back to a time when he was young. His gaze is still just as angry as he looks now, only he's a bit scuffed up.
‘Ever since that day… I lived in fear that, for simply being in your way, I’d be struck down again… until I decided I’ve had enough…’ He stares at a younger Shiori as she looks down on him with an intimidating glare. It fades back to now as Shiori stares at Drake in the present but with a much softer look in her eyes.
“But even now, you’re still acting like I don’t mean anything to you! Like I’m so far beneath you, and I’ve had enough!” He shouts with an intense look before pulling a knife out of his pocket and dashing towards her. Amy gasps in shock as Shiori’s eyes widen. “I’ll make you feel small, I’ll make you feel weak!” he shouts as he runs towards her. Shiori doesn’t move and stares at him.
“No! Stop, you can’t do this!” Amy shouts before jumping in front of Shiori as Drake swings the knife at her. Both their eyes widen as Amy shuts hers tightly, waiting for the strike, but it never comes. Amy slowly opens her eyes to see the knife stopped right in front of her chest, lodged in Shiori’s hand. Shiori is standing tightly behind her with her hand in front of Amy, stopping the knife. It bleeds as Drake stares for a moment. Amy shakily looks at Shiori.
“You… you protected me, even after I..” Amy says softly. Shiori smiles at her a bit.
“Of course. You’re my friend.” Shiori says. Amy’s eyes begin to tear up as Shiori looks back at Drake. He grunts with an angry look as the knife shakes, unable to be pulled from Shiori’s hand. He then glares at Amy with intense eyes.
“What the Hell are you doing?! You’re protecting her?! You could’ve gotten hurt or died-” He abruptly stops as his eyes widen. He looks at the knife in Shiori’s hand that he is still holding onto before realizing what he could have done. He quickly lets it go and steps back. Shiori relaxes her stance and steps next to Amy, pulling the knife out of her hand. Drake shakes for a moment before gritting his teeth and glaring at Shiori. “This is all your fault..”
“You have to stop.” Amy says. Drake is surprised a bit as Amy speaks up. “I know this feeling. Some deep hatred for someone you barely know.. based on the pain they gave you so long ago. But this isn’t right! You’re acting no better!” She shouts passionately as Drake stares at her. She pauses for a moment before speaking again. “The things you’re trying to do… they don’t get you what you want…”
She looks down with a sad look as she thinks back to the Sports Festival, when Hina and Ichika left her because of what she did. Tears start to softly fall down Amy’s cheeks.
“You only lose the more you try to take back…” Amy says softly. Drake’s expression softens for a moment before he shakes his head and gets angry again.
“But this is her fault! She chose to be this way! She chose to be a bully! ” Drake shouts. Shiori’s eyes widen just a bit.
“But it’s not! You’re blaming her for something she couldn’t-”
“No. He’s right.” Shiori interrupts her. Amy looks at Shiori in surprise as she steps forward. Drake clenches his fist again and glares at her. “He’s completely right, and there is no excuse. I was mean and cruel for no reason past what I felt about myself. I didn’t care what anyone else felt, I didn’t care about what happened to others. And all of this is the consequence of my own actions.” Shiori says, filled with emotion as her eyes begin to get glossy. She slowly steps towards Drake as he takes one step back. He shakes and sweats as he tries to keep his anger aflame. She stops when she’s just out of arm's reach of him.
“I chose to be mean. I chose to be a bully. But today, right now, I choose to be better.” She says softly as she raises her injured hand towards him, offering it to him. Drake looks at it in surprise and confusion before looking at her in the same way. “I may not remember what I did to you, any of you, but I’m sorry.” Shiori says genuinely. Drake’s eyes widen in that moment.
‘She… doesn’t remember..?’ He thinks of that moment from before where he was beaten up, staring at her as she stares back at him intimidatingly. ‘Do I… even remember?.. I just remember her and the way she made me feel… Can I even say what she did?..’ He thinks to himself as this conflict begins to rise in him. The other members of the group all begin to think about her words. They all sit in silence for a moment before one of the girls steps up.
“Drake? I think I’m gonna go home now… I don’t.. agree with what we’re doing anymore…” She says nervously before stepping away. He watches as another one steps up.
“I wanted to make her feel how she made me feel, but… hurting others for it? What was I thinking?..” He says softly as they each one by one, begin to leave him. Drake watches before turning his attention back to Shiori’s offered hand. He stares for a moment before sighing a bit.
“I spent so long trying to make you hurt the way you hurt me… But it seems I’m not even really sure what that is…” He looks up at her before extending his hand and shaking hers, reluctance in his eyes but his body does so genuinely.
“I don’t expect you to like me, not even a little. But hurting others… won’t bring you peace.” Shiori says before looking back at Amy, who lowers her head a bit. “I know.”
Drake looks at her before nodding a bit and stepping back. He rubs the back of his head awkwardly before looking around.
“Uh… I guess I’ll see you around.” He says before turning around. He takes a step before stopping with a surprised look on his face as his name is called.
“Drake, wait for me.” He looks back to see Hashigara approaching him and taking his hand. She smiles at him as he smiles back softly before walking off together. Shiori watches for a moment before exhaling in relief.
“Finally. I hope that’s the end of all these revenge schemes.” She says while placing her hands on her hips as Amy shyly approaches her.
“Yeah… Sorry about that…” Amy says softly. Shiori turns and looks at her confused.
“Why are you apologizing?” she asks.
“Well, it’s mostly my fault they went after you. After my stunt thing at the Sports Festival, they got all inspired and stuff…” Amy says. Shiori shakes her head with a smile.
“There’s always been people after me. That’s not your fault.” Shiori says. Amy looks at her softly. “Whether it be because of my eyes or because of my actions, people tend not to like me very much. But now I don’t care if they do or don’t... because I got friends who love me the way I am.” Shiori says with a warm smile on her face before placing her clean hand on Amy’s shoulder. Amy smiles back at her when suddenly, they hear someone call for Amy.
“Amy?..” They turn to find Ichika and Hina approaching them. Amy looks surprised as Shiori smiles.
“Speaking of friends.” Shiori says.
“Guys, what’re you doing here?” Amy asks.
“W-well, ya know, we were in the area…” Hina says awkwardly when Ichika speaks up.
“Shiori called us. She said you were in trouble, so we…” Ichika says softly as Amy’s eyes begin to tear up.
“You guys were gonna come help me..?” Amy asks softly. They both look down shyly before Hina speaks up.
“We couldn’t just let you get hurt! You’re our friend!” Hina cries as tears roll down her face. Ichika also begins crying out.
“We missed you, main! It hasn’t been the same without you!” Ichika cries.
“You guys!” Amy shouts. They all start crying and jump into a hug together.
“I’m sorry I didn’t back you up back then!” Hina says.
“Yeah! We should’ve said something!” Ichika says. Amy shakes her head.
“No way! I was totally in the wrong, not you guys!” Amy shouts. They hold each other on the ground while crying overdramatically as Shiori smiles a bit before letting out a sigh.
“Finally got that off my conscience too. Today’s been pretty productive, I’d say.” Shiori says with an accomplished look as we zoom out into the night sky.
A little way away, Drake and Hashigara walk together with soft smiles on their faces when suddenly someone steps in front of them. They stop with surprised looks as a small group of people begins to surround them. They sweat with nervous looks as a familiar face approaches them.
“Between trying to get revenge on Shiori and recruiting people into your little gang to do it, you’ve certainly made quite the ruckus.” Tom from the Sports Festival says. His face looks quite upset as the group makes sure to cut off any exits they had.
“What’s going on?” Drake asks with a nervous look while looking at the others, who all look just as upset as Tom. Tom looks down while pulling a toothpick from his pocket.
“Funny enough, I just had a run in with one of those unlucky few who turned down your offer of companionship. You remember what you did to those who turned you down?” Tom asks while sticking the toothpick between his teeth and looking Drake in the eyes, an intensity in them. Drake is taken aback by his comment before sweating and looking down, remembering what he and his group would do. Kicking and beating fellow students while on the ground for simply turning them down. Drake’s face shows that he knows what Tom is talking about. Tom stares at him with an intensely disapproving look.
“Unfortunately, that unlucky kid was my little brother.” Tom says. Drake looks up with shock in his eyes, as does Hashigara while covering her mouth. “So, let’s do this. Tonight, we’re going to show you the same kindness you showed him.” He says in a dark tone. Drake steps back as the group slowly steps closer towards them both. They freak out as it fades to black.
